Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker contender in the world by most of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before his first birthday. His grandfather introduced him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to learn anything he possibly could about poker. Phil routinely would tell his parents that he was going to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t let the detrimental comments from others kill his goal of being one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.
Phil began playing intently after acquiring a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for him were a teaching period and coming away with a win was not a normal thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved two final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he defeated a number of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Las Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to discipline and a continuing passion for the game of poker. He says that he is learning every single day and is quite humble about his success. He knows he makes errors in each game of poker and always strives to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has won some big tournaments, he likes winning money games on a regular basis.
