Gus Hansen experienced a marvelous year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only one to achieve final poker table in 3 of the competitions. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You might remember one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker history against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen secured a massive pot with quads against Daniel’s full house. Gus has earned many tv poker appearances and is thought to be one of the greatest gamblers anywhere in the world. While participating in net poker, another side of Hansen has appeared. He regularly plays in the 200/400 NL max buy in of $40, 000. Hansen usually buys-in for the min of $16, 000 and plays very weak. He sits there waiting for a good hand and then pushes all-in. I believe Hansen is a great poker player but certainly not even close to the everyday players at 200/400no limit. Unless Gus is bankrupt, he has absolutely no reason to settle at the game with the min buy in.
Buying in for the minimum takes almost all of the ability out of big stack poker. Gus is accepted to be one of the best poker players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy-in for the full amount. I think television can skew our perception of the real world every now and then. The best poker players anywhere in the world might be players you have won’t have heard of before.
